But Gaol is bearcharging, so he's definitely a ranger. Why is a ranger wielding maces? Does one of the new ranger types get the mace skill? Its either that or Gaol is wielding two blunt axes/swords/whatever.

Since muter was in group with Sulye I'm assuming he was hasted, so the fact that gaol outmelee'd his face off whilst slowed I would attribute to wilderness fam. And if you're right about being unable to flee from that room, well, I guess serpentstrike was kind of his best choice once he realized he was getting owned by a permalagged slowed ranger. Oh well.
