Your devil provided you barrier, aura. No shit...you don't need a barrier or aura wand when you are using devils.

More effective would have been a mors-gravis and earth elemental. Then you can make use of ABS, and word when the villager is under half-health....and gaunt him to a place he can't escape easily.
