I came from a mudd where as a thief you get a skill that allows you to choose the direction your fleeing much like retreat does in this mudd but it was instantaneous. As such once you play a thief for over a hundred hours its just a habit to type flee e, flee w etc. Most likely this guy comes from something similar and has never dropped the habit.
