If you mine a bunch of logs you may notice some scions have different echoes that fire off when calling powers. Even non leaders can achieve the higher levels of mastery of the shadow plane (without imm intervention)

Given the history of zhenyen he is likely at the highest end of that spectrum even without leader/gear boosts
