Lost Product Key

Hey Gang,
The hard drive on my computer died and as a result, I have to re-install everything. The sticker with the microsoft windows 7 key on the bottom is rubbed off so I was curious what my next option would be? If I have to spend $100 is it better to just get windows 8?
