It could be your time is bad or bad creep skill or home terrain or size, if I'm not mistaken. So, as example, a giant plainsrunner in the swamp with poor skill and time would fail "very often" but a svirf explorer wouldn't have said problems because they're small and home terrain is virtually everywhere. There is a decent little basic ranger faq on DIKU-Wiki too.
