On the one hand, it's great that one class has so much versatility that you can't really capture it easily.
On the other hand, what's a newbie to do?

So, how about this:

1) What are some race/terrain/expertise combos that should NOT be attempted.

2) What's good for a total noob?

3) What's good for a noob who wants to be in : outlander (g/n/e), fortress, nexus, tribunal.

I think of the three, first is the most valuable. If you go down the wrong path, it may sour the class and entire experience.

total noob should go forester survivalist, period.

As a noob, I like explorer more. forester or cave. Better explore abilities. Less good PvP. (n/t)

imo forester survivalist would be the best noob choice cause it's vanilla ranger, pre-tweaks, similar to many other ROM rangers, perfect to learn the class basics (n/t)

It is not vanilla. Doesn't have two animal pets. (n/t)

explorer would be my second choice, wanderlust and trap avoidance being invaluable in cabal wars (n/t)
