Use a bare hand as your main weapon, thus eliminating the possibility for parrying.

I'm not sure the order that defenses go in, on the unseen check-list.

Anyone recall? I thought it was dodge, then parry, then shield block.

See, if you are wielding a weapon then you are denying opportunities to shield block (and improve at it) because parry will go off first.
