Personally, I find the Gnomish race to be good for new people. They are a bubbly social race. As for classes, I'd suggest either Transmuter, Shapeshifter or Healer. Empowering a Gnomish Healer is super easy, and super easy to keep Empowerment if you understand your character.

Glad to have another CFer.
