I haven't played since the revamp, but if you get a form like Cobra you don't need any anything else to solo explore. Sure, rattlesnake regen would be nice to switch to, but not needed.

Group exploration is where the you get the big rewards though, make it known that you want to explore and you'll be surprised how many random people contact you.
