If you're an explorer, range won't matter too much, and leveling should be cake, as you'll most likely get all sorts of higher level goodies helping you rank. Ranking an elf invoker was probably the easiest character for me to rank to date. Once you hit shields you're biggest worry may very well be finding ways to turn down groups politely because you need to practice (which won't be to bad with elf int). Trust me that as an elf invoker you'll be on the top of every goodies "wanna be a friend" list.
Also as an obvious goodie class you will get other goodies hitting you up for taking you along exploring and gear-gathering with them. An invoker alone might have a tough time exploring if you don't already have too many invoker-friendly areas in mind- on the other hand, everybody loves having an invoker friend to shield them up and dish out spells for them. Again, you're more likely to have this work in your favor as an elf than a neutral human.
You might want to take a look at the faqs and tweak a couple affinities a point one way or another purely for practicing efficiency, but don't go below 4 for any path. But default worked just fine for me.
The only real downside as an elf is that you can't go burn up other goodly mobs. Take sphere destruction or chaos or something else in your role to justify burning up "borderline" non-sentient neutral mobs ;).
Just a thought.
