Between exploration and observation, just go everywhere. Hometowns, ranking areas (look at the unique mobs), explore areas, etc. Go through every area and look at anything you think is important, unique, or noteworthy.

I've gotten to the point where I can score a solid 10k in objs/expl. xp in the process of lowbie questing / gear getting without going out of my way.
