In that good characters are inherently entirely "others-interested" and Heralds dedicate them to the "higher cause" of knowledge, at the expense of others. Presumably, a paladin who would be willing to give up others to dedicate himself to knowledge wouldn't be a truly good character, and would likely have to be turned neutral. In this event, the paladin would likely forfeit his chances at gaining virtues. You can't both try to be the most holy being on Thera AND be a noble guardian of knowledge. You have to pick one or the other. Thus, why good aligns in general tend to be excluded from Herald, and especially paladins.
If they require a singular dedication to knowledge above all else, they'd have to be only neutral aligned which is a very, very narrow view of Heralds, imo. But I've never had a Herald, so what do I know.
My character viewed knowledge as power and sacred, so he was planning to cultivate it as much as possible within the world and put himself in a position where he'd have the most knowledge of all. Others might view his arts as an abomination (raising the dead and whatnot) and obviously try to kill him, but he wasn't a chaotic evil type (he wasn't out to make his mark and cut out a place in the hierarchy of power through physical confrontations). Think of him as the spoiled prince who smiles in the court and puts on a great show when in the spotlight doing all the right things required of him, but when he retires to his chambers every night he does very bad things unrelated to his position of royalty.
