Maran Help...

Can someone spoon me a bit about Maran-ing and what it takes to get there? I understand some of it is number of Evil PK's, but have seen some wait till they are heros, and others who get it in the mid-30's. I know there are limited slots as well. Never been one, and am hoping with my current I can make it, but just looking for what to expect.
