So first thing is first, if you are fighting evils and have on basic mage gear (not fine leather) then you shouldn't need any preps to kill any evil or any class in your range solo.
You should not be expecting good results against neutrals unless they are non melee classes.
Conjurers in general are less about preping up the wazoo and more about pairing the strengths of your servitors against the weaknesses of your opponents. For instance angels and elementals are strongly melee based. Against opponents with strong defenses they are not going to be super effective. Angels do however have some direct damage skills that are great however about half of them only work on evils or outdoors so if you are not fighting an evil or outdoors against someone with strong melee defenses then yeah you will need a lot of prepage.
If you are trying to learn to pk I strongly recomend not playing a goodie conjie. The only people who you can use archons in pk against and expect to get a kill are total noobs, bards, and thirsting villagers. And angels are not as effective against non evils (actually as it turns out angels are decent vs goodies since they don't get protection against other goodies hurting them) Demons are a lot better because you have options, you can use the challegha against strong melee defense foes because acid blast and vitriolic stream ignore defenses. Moroso does a fair amount of melee damage and lags somewhat with a burst damage option, harmentia is the highest melee damage output of the demons (enough to kill people through abs that don't defend well) and the mors-gravis demon can absorb more damage before dieing and will occasionaly dispel.
