Mind if I ask what do you enjoy in this game, if everything's so bad? There must be something you like, since you stick with the game for so long!
I'm only playing CF for 2 months, but I'm by no means new to mudding. And I'll tell you the truth of all muds - interaction with other players is the key. If you don't genuinely enjoy discovering everything for yourself, just ask others IC. There's no shame in that. I personally view it as just another approach to exploring. Don't be afraid to show your ignorance, most people aren't jerks that will see to abusing it. Also, don't solo, it's boring and only useful for perfecting skills.
Now to your question.
I do realize that when my current char dies of old age or con loss, maybe people will say over his grave that he achieved nothing, at least not by himself. Yes, I do care very much about achievement. Yes, his build is gimped and I know what mistakes I made, so even if I delete now, I'll already be better with my next. But I still don't want to delete.
The reason for this is simple. I like assembling a life story for my character. My current has had four different descriptions over time, reflecting his change with age and experience. Quite a role too, I did it for my own fun and not for imm experience. If I delete that char and start over, the story will be unfinished, and I will not have this enjoyment of the feel of continuity.
There is one condition, however, under which I certainly will delete. It's when I realize I can't follow my role well enough. I don't make huge demands to myself, but if I see that I completely fail at RP, I will delete and try a role that fits me better.
Hope that helps! Cheer up!
