Lots of people (myself included) don't follow one basic trick of getting kills. The trick is: your victims are less likely to flee if they think they have a chance. As such, if you always prep then your enemies avoid you unless they're prepped too, and when you're both prepped, the damage output is so low that whoever wins can't seal the kill. Most kills are gotten by unprepped guys vs unprepped guys!
Why so?
Ideally you want people to care as much about dying as they do in first-person shooter games. I.e. not a lot.
But trouble is, there's all that "dying is embarrassing" thing that I guess came from other muds. I used to care about con and gear, now I don't, but I still don't want other players to emote how they spit on my corpse. Or make it into steaks, or a zombie, or a poncho, or a cured hide sack.
