Dam Redux Preps

I've never played a melee class outside of Battle. I've been on hiatus for a few months but am considering rolling a new character (non-battle, melee class).

I really only know about a very few dam redux preps that seem to have big drawbacks or are an extreme pain in the ass to get. Are stoneskin, aura, shield sources plentiful in the game? I'd definitely not complain if anyone wants to PM me a spoon!

Also, is there really 3 new areas in the game?
