I came from a MUD that, I am pretty certain, was trying to be an offshoot of CF... and it was alright, at first, until you read between the lines.
The staff was awful, and I don't just mean that they cheated. They treated people like dicks. Infractions against rules you did not know were in existence got you slayed multiple times in some cases. Condeathed, in others. No warnings. There were ooc cheat rings and IMM cheat rings, too.
Everybody, and I mean almost literally every single player in the game, was taught to full-loot and full-sac everything, every PK, by the vets. Roleplay between good and evil, or anyone vs their enemy, by CABAL LEADERS even, often consisted of enter room, murder and kill person, full loot and full sac, then wait until they get back to their empty corpse and do the 'tip' emote where you gallantly tip your hat at the other player. And then poof, the other person was gone.
It was a really ridiculously harsh environment that catered to absolutely NOBODY who did not know the ins and outs of the game.
Here, I can play three or four characters long-term (which I have) and get the hang of the game and end up being legitimately competitive.
There, you learned fucking NOTHING, because you spent all your time trying to re-gear as a newbie. I must had had dozens of characters there and I was still getting raped every time I turned around because instead of learning how to fight in an even one-on-one situation I was getting raped by a guy with superior amazing gear and then having even my most inferior items sacrificed.
Absolutely NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER was allowed to be shared outside of the game. The staff did NOT permit people to have things like this wonderful website we have here. Seriously, without QHCF I'd still be lost sometimes. It helps me get around often.
There were good imms who tried to turn things around, but none of them lasted. And most of the staff didn't care. The forums were moderated almost like a Nazi regime. If you guys think it's bad or getting bad here, you just haven't even come close to experiencing what bad really is.
I came here a couple years ago and I really haven't had that many heroes. Mostly paladins. A ranger or two. No mages. But I've gotten the hang of the game within three characters. I played the other mud for almost seven years.
I have a bigger presence here on QHCF than the Officials only because QHCF is set up more post-friendly. The Officials really is a helpful and friendly place.
I could go on, and on, about how bad it was - and with a playerbase that (back then) was the size of the one we have now! And they treated them like garbage.
But I'd rather just leave it at that... I am really thankful to have found CF, and I don't miss the other place for even a second.
