Defensive shifters with the right forms who group a lot generally are OK without ABS but if you want to actually kill (such as with offense/air) it is very hard to stay alive against certain characters without it. You basically dramatically limit the situations where you can reasonably fight if you don't have it, limit your chances against a competent warrior type, and lower you chances of getting kills.
