As a low dex warrior type char, does the type of armor have any effect on things?

Since weight doesn't matter as much, if you have 2 pieces of gear for example, a light armored vest or a metal plate breastplate and both have similar stats, would you go with the heavy or light armor? does it matter which?
Assuming you have both light armor use and metal armor use aswell.

ie, would you run around a giant with shorts and a tee-shirt on or full metal armor head to toe, even if you gained similar stats at the end of it?
Does it matter if you mix and match or keep to one or the other even if there are slighty better stats on the baggy pants over some armored leggings?
