They developed around the idea of bringing the 'Eternal Night', an apocalyptic event where the nightwalkers invade. They often roleplay towards an Omen of their time which varies with Imm/Leadership direction. This was great while there were active imms in Scion but I'm genuinely unsure what they're like at the moment or who's running the Cabal. Generally it's a secret except to the current members. That you'll have to find out IC.

The major roleplay point to remember (and is why the priests/warriors have a lesser role in Scion) is that in the alternate dimension of the Nightwalkers, magic is a scarce resource. They don't have a Hole and Veil like Thera does producing endless mana. Hopefully that clue with give you some idea as to why they act the way they do, and point you in the right roleplay direction. You'll have fun learning more. Just don't forget - many of the cabal members will act quite callous because they're playing power-hungry roles. Expect to take some abuse, but don't take it personally. Roll with it and try to play up to them.

There's more inside the cabal - Books there list all about Nightwalker origins, culture and workings. Scion powers fit really well into their niche roleplay. Definitely explore the Maethien in the past when you can, there's some reading materials on high end mobs there.
