He is stating the gear part to show that he was not Emperor at the time of the fight. Nothing to do with the gear changing the outcome of the fight. He made choices in that fight which I wouldn't have made. Everyone is entitled to a bad day/fight once in a while I suppose. I would have employed a few things that could have dramatically changed the outcome.
