First, none of them worked. They wasted possible other openers (and the opportunity to just gang him as a pair) for the chance at the kill shot. So, the fact that assassinate is in the game may actually have *saved* this guy's life. Also, look how badly he beat them down when they missed. One unlucky flee or one command too many and they're toast. So I'm not entirely sure it was "risk free".
