It was in Udgaard so very likely for patrollers to jump in but we had to bail before anything showed because that shit was wild. I think I wasn't using prots because 3vs1 with a bard (i.e. prot vs good and anthem). Me and the warrior were both bashing because shaman with no protective shield = bash right? In any case, yeah, in the space of that one encounter it did look OP. I wanted to try soloing him with ABS and iceball spam but I don't think I got the opportunity.

What I took from it though was that there's a desolation path skill which stands in for protective shield somehow.
