That you tank/hit better with exotic. Else HPM would be just stupid.
But the question is how much better. I, personally, like flexebility of specs. For you, perhaps, batter spam with stsf works far better. It's question of style. I believe imms tried to boost exotics well enough to compensate the loss of a spec. If you are bash/bash type, then HPM is fine, you can continue that with good exotic melee. If you prefer tactic flexebility, then you would probably do better with spec skills.
