Leena was the closest I've come to enjoying CF in awhile. I had a slow period at work and I was trying to put off a project and unwind, so I rolled and was able to play many hours a week (unusual for me). I enjoyed learning the class and PKing, but the who list is SO short and the game is SO big (room/area count wise) it was always a ton of legwork to get a shot at a PK or find someone with whom to RP.
Then I ran up against a necro that had several ranks on me and was very fast with and likely to land sleep. After getting away a few times I thought, what the hell...I'll roll the dice here. We're both well equipped so it's not like he'll take much gear and I think I might be able to mental jolt him to death and avoid a sleep/spell up. Anyway, it's worth mixing it up some because that's what the game is all about, right? Long story short, it was a close fight...I lost...he used his pets to do a full loot (seemed to have saced most of it) and wouldn't return any tells or RP with me in any way.
So, I set out to do a full re-equip from scratch, get most of the way there, and then think, "Why do I even play this game? It's just steeped in soul sucking vitriol. The immortals are some combination of exhausted and hypocritical cheaters perpetuating many of the core problems. The shrinking playerbase has distilled down to the same set of usual suspects spewing the same tired shit at each other." I quit out and realized my work project seemed more fun than finishing the re-equip process. What was I even re-equipping for? Four days later I still had no desire to log in, so I deleted - and walking away feels really good. For that, I thank you, RobDarken.
When I discuss CF on these forums or with my CF friends I'm constantly pissed off by the gap between what I think it could be and what we currently have, but at the end of the day I have no power to fix that. I think the "distillation" process that has left the community with a few unproductive and harmful members has happened on the mortal side as well as the immortal side, and culture is really hard to change. I keep hearing Marcus's recent post that the word of the day is 'constructive'...I admire the sentiment but I just don't see a way to fix it. You have a vicious cycle where the negativity problems feed the shrinking playerbase and the shrinking playerbase feeds the problems.
When I was playing Leena, I was really looking forward to posting logs. I had some great fights and some cool RP sessions...but I'm having a hard time seeing the point to posting them. I also have a log of me fighting and then talking to Guthk (the orc that Scrimbal and Shaapa claimed I played because I expressed an opinion about his enemy on the log board)...but what's the point? That's the exact kind of vitriol that I'm happy to leave and it's not like proving one of the jackasses on Dio's wrong changes anything.
Bye-bye CF...you were awesome when you were awesome. Plug pulled.
