As an avid backpacker, I recommend Gregory backpacks.

They will offer the most durability/comfort. They are a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it. www.backcountry.com generally has some good deals

In fact, I own an earlier version of this:

It has an outside support which is a light metal alloy frame that keeps the actual "Pack" off of your back, allowing airflow. The thing is this: most "urban" backpacks are going to have an internal frame, and you will sweat like a dog with that fabric against your back hiking up a mountain. Believe me - you want an external frame :P. This one also has a stashable rainfly.

I'd say go for anything Archwood makes, just ask Steve Climber

That is hilarious. And now I'm reading about external frames. +1 Internets for you. (n/t)

If you need it to have the siege engine functionality, then I'd say go for the Whipsnake. (n/t)

I've never heard a complaint about Swiss Army backpacks.

It's never too early. When you say swiss army backpack, do you mean SwissGear? (n/t)

Frosty May 08, 2015 06:14AM

Yes. That's it. (n/t)
