Amelie - Full of culture, and entertainment. An unusual twist on the 'guardian angel' role. Very pretty movie, green filter adds a certain je ne sais quois.
Finding Nemo - There is nothing singular that this movie did better than others beside the Animation, but it is so good at everything you can't fault it. Passionate, funny, dramatic, informative and engaging all the way. Makes amazing use of visual communication in a difficult environment (underwater).
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - What, I need to explain this one?
Resevoir Dogs - Classic. Just classic. Tarantino is great at viewing films romanticly, and this one captures how the idea and delivery is more important than things like budget and advertising.
Clockwork Orange - Disturbing. Yet fascinating. I guess more of a must-see than a great film in many ways. But it's hard to define a difference between the two.
Serenity - The idea behind the making of the movie - that fans protested until hoarse that there WAS economic incentive, and pressured the industry into making a move they wanted - proves that although we're so heavily relient on the money makers to recognise the art and passion behind movies, they aren't entirely deaf to anything past their profit. Asside from that, I often find myself quoting this movie in one way or another. From the more profound ones like 'Half of writing history is hiding the truth." to the more comical "Boy, it sure would be nice if we had some grenades, don't you think?". I still think my favourite is when the Doc is going to say the 'safeword' and Jane is like "WELL DONT SAY IT!", zoe:"It only works on her Jayne.", "Oh, well see, now I know that."
The characters themselves deserve an accolade for being so deep and interacting in such a real but comical style it's endearing. If I was going to give up a fortune for anything - it'd to be to see more of that family they made in space.
And because now my brains stuck on serenity, here's another great quote:
Mal and Jayne are fighting, hoping to end it Mal turns around to face him.
Mal: Do YOU want to run this ship?
Jayne: Yes!
Mal: (caught off guard) Well... you can't...
Edit: Hell, one more for the road. From the series.
Mal is held by Niska, and is fighting his torture gimp on the edge of a precipice. In his moment of peril, he appears to be getting the upper hand as Zoe, Jayne and Wash enter.
Jayne is about to shoot when Zoe lowers his weapon with a stoic hand gesture.
Zoë: Jayne, this is something the captain has to do for himself.
Mal: (struggling to speak) No! No it's not!
Zoë: Oh! (All three raise the guns and blow the shit out of the russian torture gimp)
