If the higgs boson (The main things it's looking for) doesn't exist, then for the most part, we've screwed up physics and none of it works as our currrent model predicts. The higgs boson will confirm whether or not we're right about all objects mass and its interactions.
So in a way, it is a God Particle.
The LHC will hit the necessary energy levels for us to view the higgs, according to the math, to get one big enough to view the highest energy levels would require an accelerator the size of the solar system (with current methods). The math predicts that until we hit 10^16 TeV (Planck scale) our standard model will be validified, if the higgs exists.
