The former two groups may be staunchly conservative, and may think the country is headed in the wrong direction, but they're generally not the "sky is falling" types who're stocking up on canned goods and guns for the coming apocalypse. They're generally not the type who advocate summarily executing Mexicans caught illegally entering the country.
I'll have disagree. They may not communicate their ideas as bluntly and crudely as Prothero, but many conservatives of both the NRO and Fox variety share the same feelings. Gun sales are up, by a lot, mostly due to Obama's election. [
www.nytimes.com] As for the canned food, there's lots of reasons people are stocking up on canned foods. It's cheaper to eat at home, food prices are predicted to continue to rise (so buying in bulk now will save you a little bit of money in 6 months to a year), and it's nice to have just in case.
I have also heard a lot of support of putting the military on our border to help with the "Mexican invasion". Some conservatives aren't in favor of this, as they're more in the free trade camp.
Edited for clarification: When people like Clinton and Obama are elected, it isn't just that gun sales go up, but also guns used for non-hunting purposes.
