Ultimately, I consider it a socialist policy: this doesn't make it a bad thing. Its just that the idea of public, guaranteed healthcare is designed specifically to benefit a minority (poor people who cannot or will not buy private healthcare), although every taxpayer, the majority of which don't really benefit, is handing over the cash for it.
That being said, the current healthcare system is deeply flawed and probably unsupportable: I believe that while a good public healthcare plan could indeed resolve many of these problems. I also believe that implemented improperly, it could make them so much worse it isn't even funny.
Currently, I am mostly ambivalent. I favor the idea of a public healthcare plan slightly more than maintaining the current system, because I believe that change within the current system is necessary and there aren't any stronger alternative ideas. However, I do recognize that this shift to public healthcare could potentially change for the worse rather than for the better, and I also recognize that most people are talking out of their ass when they discuss this subject.
