1) They don't like white people much (gai-jin=outside person/foreigner) in smaller areas and can be outright nasty about it.

2) If you haven't already learn the social customs from a book. They are not very tolerant to lack of manners. Start here maybe [en.wikipedia.org]

3) Interesting side note from above, turns out if you like a girl in japan you can't go up and approach her and expect anything, even if she likes you, it would look bad (slutty) for her to leave with you. On the other hand if you are introduced by one of her friends you are ok. What my buddy did was go up to the ugly one in the group and chat her up with the intention of being introduced to the one you like. Good tip if you're single.

4) Bring a box of condoms that fit.

5) Take some time to travel the lands if you can. I hear it's one of the most rich places culturally.
