The time when you work out might be a factor

January 29, 2010 08:58AM
Contrary to the general belief that since you get tired you sleep easy, people who work out in the evenings have problems going to sleep. I work out around 7-8 p.m. and that pumped me up enough to keep me up till 1 a.m. or so, got awfully tiring.

I was fine when I worked out in the mornings, enough energy to get through the day, and the right amount of fatigue to fall asleep. But ever since I switched to evening workouts, I started having problems sleeping. Though I was able to compensate for it, partly, with a powernap in the afternoon.

Lack of sleep also means the body doesn't release as much growth hormones, therefore not as good results from your workouts :(

You could try raising your core temp. with warm milk mixed with 1/4th teaspoon turmeric, helps you sleep. Plus ofcourse, if you can wake up early in the mornings, it could help you sleep early at night. This is what I tried and it helped.

I have heard that while alcohol might get you to sleep, it doesn't get you into the deep sleep stages as much, and hence you wake up without feeling too refreshed. I don't know if this is true, I never tried it.

Avoid sleeping pills. Once you are hooked, you are screwed. Read a book on history/religion/philosophy or something. Not a crime thriller.

It is recommended you don't spike yourself with any caffeine or boost yourself with sugar/starchy foods after around 6 p.m. Sugar in the blood makes you hyper-alert. Once the sugar levels fall you start feeling drowsy, hence stopping your sugar intake 3-4 hours before bedtime is a good idea.

Go to sleep when you're feeling tired in the evening.

NacMacFeegle January 26, 2010 06:29AM

Actually having kid helps you sleep, cause you will sleep WHENEVER you get a chance. NT

If you don't want to take sleeping pills...

A few jumping jacks. Helps you relax. (n/t)

PaulO January 26, 2010 03:04AM

I disagree with that, but some mild/moderate stretching is probably great for your relaxation/sleep nt

Has worked for me. Try it a few times. (n/t)

Stevers January 26, 2010 03:45AM

A few jumping jacks shouldn't give you an endorphin rush. (n/t)

_Magus_ January 26, 2010 05:49AM

One caveat to this statement.

Splntrd January 26, 2010 05:41AM

This is good advice. From one insomniac to another, good books, copious masturbation and good ganja means you'll sleep like a babe. NT
