One of the safest countries in the Middle East is Iraq. It is definitely a good place to soak up the Middle Eastern culture. Failing that, Afghanistan. I hear the Helmand province is really idyllic this time of year.
You'll want to learn Hebrew. It isn't the national language, but you get a lot of respect if you can speak it fluently.
The safest places to go are actually enemy occupied territories and pockets of resistance. This might seem like a silly choice, but this is the last place insurgents would expect to find you. This way you will remain one step ahead.
Be sure to wear a shirt with the US flag on it to advertise yourself as an ambassador.
Don't forget to admire automobiles on the side of the road, especially if they seem abandoned.
If you see a helicopter gunship, point your camera directly at them, this way they will interpret you as a low threat and know you are friendly.
