You can import all your bootleg mp3s into iTunes no problem, and then either manually sync them to your iPod or just sync the entire library. It works just fine.

As far as I know, you can't do the same with video files though. I tried copying a bunch of bittorrented TV episodes onto my iPhone recently and had no luck. Music works fine though.
