My take on piracy of tv-series (I dont download films), is that it is our only real way of showing the big companies that we arent happy with the service they provide. This is especially evident if you live outside the US, where we may or may not get the series like 3-12 months after they air in the US. The current generation, the internet generation, dont accept the old terrible service that TV currently is with fixed timeslots. I want to watch my favourite tv-series at most 1 day after they air in the US, independant of my current location in the world. Anything less is not acceptable. If they offer this service to me, I am willing to pay good money.
Ethicly I guess it is wrong to download and watch series without paying for it, but if I watch a series I find to be of really good quality, I go out and buy the DVD when it is released.
Make a service like Hulu worldwide and offer every TV-series there. You can either pay a monthly fee that increases depening on how much you want to have access to. This next part is important. You must be able to pay for 1 season of a show or 1 episode of a show.. or you may chose to subscribe to 1 channel or go for a cable like package with alot of channels. It is important to be able to pay for 1 show, not the whole tv-channel. Because im not interested in paying for the shitty uninteresting TV to get to the good stuff. This would also push the channels towards producing quality stuff instead of just spewing out shit to fill the timeslots, because it would sell better. I think part of the reason alot of resist this transition is that they will devalue their shows when it comes to selling it to channels abroad, but they would supplement this loss of income with the (considerable) income from worldwide internet sales. Especially series that got a relativly small audience like sci-fi would benefit GREATLY from this. Sci-Fi is hard to sell to individual channels, since the audience and fan base is smaller than say.. a show like Rome or Sopranos. But if you look at it worldwide there is a HUGE fanbase that never get these shows on their local channels.
Oh and!
Open it up for foreign tv-channels so they can put their series on there aswell.
