It's also true that the niners had other troubles that contributed to Smith's lack of production, but I think you'd be hard pressed to argue Smith hasn't been the primary source of suck for the niners over the last few years. And even this year the niners have done well despite Smith not because of him. I mean the Saints game was probably the best game of his career and he was 24 of 42, not exactly steller numbers. I still don't think he's ever thrown for 300 yards in a game. So yeah, pretty much a huge disappointment as the #1 draft pick and projected franchise qb.
