US-used international foot is currently defined via meter, so you do acknowledge meter that way. It's just the hassle involved in changing systems that you haven't so far bothered to go through with. Physics also uses metric system and the US also acknowledges that.

Also, I don't see how you bailed their (Norwegians) asses in WW2. It was the British who helped liberate Norway from Nazi troops.
