I'm even against all forms of capital punishment. But I can definitely see why people lose hope for humanity.

I argue for and hope toward a utopian future, given the amazing things technology could eventually provide. But realistically, with the world the way it is, I have almost no hope for anything resembling that happening in my lifetime. It's certainly more likely that humans face a dystopian future, one that the rest of the life on our little planet will have to share in.
