Thinking our country was founded on freedom shows an ignorance of history

April 22, 2013 08:34AM
At what point was this country ever "free?" And whom exactly are you referring to with regard to people being "free?" Certainly you don't mean non-whites, women, homosexuals, etc. when you refer to our country being historically free. Certainly you're not talking about the levels of free speech or religious freedom. The fact of the matter is that in most ways we're quite a bit more free in this country than we've ever been.

Anyone else worried about the fact Boston became a police state for 24 hours and the suspected bomber wasn't read his Miranda rights?

Sam April 21, 2013 05:06PM

The lockdown thing's a little weird and disturbing, but the not being read the rights, if it's true, doesn't bother me. I think reading of miranda rights is dumb though, but I'm aware it's probably just me.

Jib April 22, 2013 09:29PM

I really hate when people state their opinion and claim them as fact.

Java April 22, 2013 10:09AM

Not being read your miranda rights also isnt' the same as not having them

ExPaladin(VIP) April 22, 2013 01:20PM

The point of the law

Splntrd April 23, 2013 10:26AM

Agreed there. Miranda is important.

Matrik April 23, 2013 10:28AM

Our freedoms are being eroded minute by minute man. Pisses me off to think you and other vets fought for those freedoms. NT

Sam April 22, 2013 10:28AM

I respect most soldiers I meet

MiyagiYojimbo April 22, 2013 04:40PM

I don't think many people sign up thinking they are protecting freedoms to be honest. (n/t)

qurdind April 23, 2013 07:08PM

Yup. "It's a job" and "college money" are pretty popular. (n/t)

Matrik April 23, 2013 07:10PM

Pro April 22, 2013 06:46PM

You're right in general, but overblowing it in this instance.

Matrik April 22, 2013 11:22AM

'Not Martial Law'

jalim April 22, 2013 04:13PM

1. "home(S)?" 2. This isn't martial law.

Matrik April 22, 2013 07:02PM

By the way

Matrik April 22, 2013 07:22PM

well they shut down the city to citizens and had police doing block by block searches and brought in every form of police (and even some military) in the region, Its pretty difficult to be more occupied by police then what happened (unless there were no n (n/t)

Quas April 24, 2013 02:10PM

Boston was never under "Martial Law". People were requested to shelter in place.

ExPaladin(VIP) April 22, 2013 10:37AM

Right.

jalim April 22, 2013 04:13PM

Not to mention you need to look up and see exactly what martial law is.

Matrik April 22, 2013 07:02PM

Maybe not, but it IS...

Splntrd April 23, 2013 09:01AM

Sorry, one last thing on martial law.

Matrik April 23, 2013 09:28AM

Your source isn't useful.

Matrik April 23, 2013 09:24AM

By your argument

Splntrd April 23, 2013 10:03AM

A valid argument, I believe. In this instance.

Matrik April 23, 2013 10:16AM

What are your thoughts about on the militarization of America's police force?

MiyagiYojimbo April 23, 2013 05:03PM

Ok, you got me piqued, so I had to write it up tonight.

Matrik April 23, 2013 07:56PM

Militarization

No, no.

Matrik April 24, 2013 10:48AM

I'll give it a more solid read through and response tomorrow, but for now a quickie:

Matrik April 23, 2013 06:53PM

Couldn't read your post but....

Pro April 23, 2013 05:19PM

Memphis, TN is your example?

Splntrd April 23, 2013 06:49PM

Yeah, that's what I said. (n/t)

Pro April 24, 2013 02:50AM

You know I was asking you to elaborate. You're a big boy.

Splntrd April 24, 2013 07:29AM

You know, you didn't ask him to elaborate.

DurNominator(VIP) April 24, 2013 08:01PM

Let's not be so literal. It doesn't serve any point. nt

Splntrd April 25, 2013 01:56PM

Is that what you said?

Batman April 24, 2013 02:51AM

What part of Boston is not Watertown don't you understand? (n/t)

ExPaladin(VIP) April 22, 2013 04:18PM

I never said martial law in Boston. Maybe someone on that article did. It was definitely a police state there for 20 or so hours. NT

Sam April 22, 2013 11:57AM

From the article "Not only did the militarized domestic law enforcement complex put the City of Boston under martial law..." (n/t)

ExPaladin(VIP) April 22, 2013 01:08PM

Eh, it was closer to martial law than a police state. However, it was neither.

Matrik April 22, 2013 12:25PM

Staying indoors Friday was totally voluntary. Winterstorm Nemo was a lot closer to a police state.

ExPaladin(VIP) April 22, 2013 01:06PM

Armored vehicle?

Matrik April 22, 2013 07:12PM

Re: Armored vehicle?

Splntrd April 23, 2013 07:15AM

Yeah, guess I can see how people can be confused.

Matrik April 23, 2013 09:13AM

So........

Splntrd April 23, 2013 09:42AM

Minor distinction? It's a very important, major distinction. That's why I'm even pointing it out.

Matrik April 23, 2013 10:07AM

I can understand the reasoning behind not giving him his Miranda rights.

istirith April 22, 2013 03:26AM

After certain high level question askers have their time with him he will given a public court trial. The enemy combatant thing isn't about avoiding a trial, it's about doing things unethical things for anwsers while they are able. (n/t)

Absolutely.

MiyagiYojimbo April 22, 2013 01:17AM

I didn't say treat him nice. I said he is a United States citizen and he gets his rights. I would personally dick punch him if I ever met him. (n/t)

igsoeh April 21, 2013 07:35PM

Perfect example of how "inalienable" our rights really are. (n/t)

That raises serious concerns as far as I'm concerned.
