i did 2 half-drow light armors in outlander. light + ignite = damn, great mana regen.
After those, I did a human in heavy in empire. The idea was black channel to make up for no light armor. It was very playable, and the hp regen was solid if not outstanding. The armor deflection increase showed in 3-1, which was useful against fort at the time.

I think edges should play a greatly reduced role in CF, not more of a starring role. Explore for cool backstory, good gear/preps, tactical advantages of knowing an area, etc - not to read the same descriptions over and over.
I'm sure the system will continue to get tweaked, so I'm fine waiting and seeing, so to speak.
I can't log on NEARLY as much as I've been able to in the past, but I completely agree about the RP.
I think some folks believe you need a huge involved backstory ant 1.5k role to do this, but you don't. Just know how your character acts, and why, and then improvise. Its fun!
