But in a no song and no spell fight, a bard isn't that much worse off than an AP. Without communes/songs/spells, a bard could certainly hold ground against a shaman, and would whoop an invoker.

Which is what the original poster was looking for, yes? Good fighting skills, no empowerment, "magic" abilities?
