If I were Rhycyn, I'd do the same thing. That fight is going to be over immediately either way. The mage flees, or gets pounded to dust in a few rounds. You know the mage is trying to flee, no doubt about it. Pound him as hard as you can, immediately, and hope he dies. Which he did.

Dispel is absolutely fantastic for a prolonged battle, but certain situations simply demand you break out the whooping stick and nothing else.
