It's like Ultima Online on crack - action based MMO. There's no real story - player-based economy, castle sieges and full looting pvp in a territory fight between guilds.
Your skills are based on what you wear... each piece of armor and weapon gives a series of ability choices. For example, fire staff obviously gives you fire spells and divine staff gives you healing... but you can wear plate for some nice tank/taunt/survival skills or you can go cloth for casting bonuses and CC. How they stop just swapping all the time is you need to be trained in it... most people are focusing now to get to higher tiers of gear but you can always branch out and learn something else. Very much like EVE/UO = wherever you spend your time, you'll get more access to crap. Crafting, gathering, killing people, etc are all behind grinding/learning points (you passively gain points to spend, 20 a day which you can use to speed up learning something if you don't feel like grinding it).
It's pretty badass honestly - haven't spent this much time in a game in a long time. The guild vs guild fights are amazing, it's full looting craziness out in "the black" (basically "null-sec" or full pvp zones where players can own castles/territories/farms/etc). There's central zones that are safe, then mid-range areas where you can pvp but you don't loot gear (they drop some coins/resources, but no mounts/weapons/armor), or you be a man and join the Outlands.
It's basically the cabal wars of CF without roleplaying and a graphic interface :)
