"Newbies" don't have access to Dios. They dont have access to Diku's. They don't know where shit is, they don't know how shit works, and most of they time they don't know how to ask.
True. They're going to suck regardless of what they play. I mention healer and transmuter because they're not dependent on gear (like an assassin) or having their skills practice to a reasonable level (like an assassin). They're also useful to exploring / gear-gathering groups (unlike an assassin), and have a built-in connection with someone on staff who can hopefully do some IC mentoring.
I should have been more specific: a non-evil healer.

You think a real newbie is going to stick around for empowerment, and you think a real newbie is going to know how to get empowered?
If they're not a moron, sure. "help empowerment". There's also the newbie channel. Or hell, just find Dio's. It comes up in a cursory google search and is frequently mentioned on the main site.
Healers solve a number of problems newbies encounter:
1. Not having good enough gear. Answer: you're a healer, who cares?
2. Not knowing how to get to cool areas. Answer: you're a healer, people should be begging you to help them get {X}.
3. Not knowing what gear does. Answer: you have identify.
4. Not being able to generate gold, thus being unable to keep basic preps on hand and/or use town healers. Answer: you're a healer, you get identify and word for free and can cure anything a town healer can.
Really, the only thing you need to be able to do is role-play and use the "wizlist" command.
