What constitutes parity now?

Depends on the situation but essentially it means not using excessive force of numbers when your own strength will suffice. Courage is the virtue you're aiming for and while it doesn't literally mean 'always fight alone' it does mean you will need to be able to, and do so most of the time.

I saw someone mention that killing a mage that is fighting a mob is bad.

No. It's not. It's taking advantage of the situation. Timing is as much part of the battle as the skills you use. This doesn't mean jumping on other peoples fights on the eastern road, but it doesn't stop you pincering someone who is fleeing from one on their way past. A stylish rager not only polishes off the mage, but then goes to town on the mage they were fighting too :P There are varying degrees you can arrpee this to, but that's the likely minimum.

Also, do battle bards still get stripped of some songs
until they "prove" themselves?

No. But they don't get inducted by leaders anymore.
