I dunno anything about nexus of old since Trewyn was leader of battle when the nexus was formed. But now it's what ever you want. You got these ideas that other people will try to tell you. But the bottom line is what YOU see the balance as. There are basics that are obvious, but just because darkness tips doesn't mean you have to go kill that duergar warrior. You can have friends that you don't kill. You can have enemies you kill all the time. Just depends on how good a Nexun you wanna be. You can play politics, aka favorites. Or you can just go smash everything. Both work. You can NOT kill what tips the balance and instead help the weaker side. That's perfectly valid. You can be an effective seeker without killing anyone. You can be a warrior that doesn't care diddly squat about the balance and just likes to fight and joins the seekers just so he can fight everyone, especially villagers who supposedly are the best fighters.
