I just played a very miserable game of Battlefield 2 where some guy had joined my usual server, and came loaded with cheats. There were no admins around to boot him, and vote-kicking had been disabled for whatever reason...

So, this guy had a cheat where he could just fire his gun into midair and each bullet would find a head-shot victim and basically wipe everyone out as he willed it.

A few things happened:


1) Some people got really pissed off.

2) Some people (amusingly, they were on the cheater's team) told everyone to stop bitching and whining.

3) The cheater goaded everyone with mocking messages.


Now, I'd like to be able to say that only someone with sub-human intelligence, or a dickhead adolescent, would do something like that. However, I don't believe that was the case. I think this cheater was probably between the age of 20 to 30, and was at least reasonably smart. His enjoyment came purely from antagonizing. The psychology behind it is probably unnerving, and may stem from a life full of failure, bad childhood...who knows.

I know there is a small number of players (perhaps three) in CF who do this kind of thing, if not all the time, then in spurts here and there when they get the itch to piss off the world. If you know a person like this, I'd be grateful if you could post a response here with some insight as to why they do these things. Hell, if you ARE one of these people, and have the balls to fess up, I'd like to know why (I'm expecting a one-liner answer such as "BECAUSE I CAN NIGGER"...and if you were already thinking of doing it, well, fuck off?) you do what you do.


Basically, I am of an age where I can't stand people like this. I thank whatever Powers That Be that I never was granted my wish of being able to reach through the internet and murder people (don't tell me you never thought of it), because I would do it. Sure, I'd resist, but sooner or later I'd do a magical plunge through cyberspace and come out on the other side like Ivar the Boneless at the gates of York. Since I really don't want to dirty my hands by administering a Blood Eagle, I'd rather understand the inner workings of these people (however repugnant that may be to me) so that I can diffuse them when I encounter them. I'll be alive for an estimated 75+ more years...I imagine I will have many such encounters. I need to be prepared.
