P.S. I've given up trying to tell ranger newbies they should play that build.

If 45% dam redux vs. physical attacks plus the ability to kill ragers with mediocre gear and an enlarge prep at 35 isn't enough for you with wild fam and talismans being the easiest thing in the world and purchaseable haste talismans at 45 with shield and aura talismans floating around between 36 and 45, I dunno what to tell you.

The build seals kills and will get more kills than any other ranger. A nice derivative if you don't like savage is beastmaster or human/arial (especially with harbinger of talismanic doom giving you 1 round lag talismans) and a human/arial race opens up the option of using explorer which when coupled with herbalist edges is hilariously awesome: let someone drop all your stats, flee, tendwounds, herbs, and then come back and kick the shit out of them. Mountaineer or forester are both interchangeable.

But the retarded ass complaint noobs give is 'permalagging people is boring'

Enjoy losing your kills or getting your ass beat playing just about any other build. At least that one can loot.

Bearcharge is boring. Pfffft. It's like having the god damn greeting legacy on a non-warrior. In many cases the failure of creep is not even a big deal considering once you get started no one is escaping you without ganging.

Where the fights get interesting is when you can't bearcharge them to death, i.e. giants who you need to reduce, people with greeting, dagger specs, etc. Those are the fights that really teach you to use ambush, waylay, snare, ambush disarm, other talismans, warpaint, smear mud, entangle etc.

Works great for toasting two-hander paladins too once you get past the inevitable counterstrike move they will get as part of their virtue set. (hint: entangle and prot vs. metal goes a long way toward partly breaking even on that wrath vuln)

If you need to dispel someone's enlarge or other preps, dove talisman. You'll occasionally kill a couple shifters that way too, who, without control trans, would ordinarily die an embarrassing death to you even with full A/B/S up.

Thoughts on Rangers

Dear Welverin- Sticking with a character for more than three days makes it way easier to learn stuff. (n/t)

Ooo, sick burn. You're right, too, forcing Nep to make a specific rule about pledging is prolly a pretty good sign that you know what's up. (n/t)

There's been cloud savages running around for precisely these reasons.

I pretty much agree but...

Forget hunters if you want to PK. Play cloud/felar/human/welf anything but hunter. (n/t)

zoskia February 25, 2010 05:17PM

Cosign. I'd not advice anything but giant for PK however. (n/t)

dervish February 25, 2010 05:25PM

Giants have the advantage in dam and lag, but other races get more use from creep to help setup fights.

used_to_play February 25, 2010 08:51PM

Three most PK succesful rangers were felars. Just saying. (n/t)

alex February 25, 2010 07:47PM

Has more to do with the players than the build. You have to consider those rangers have about 500 more hours played than most. (n/t)

Starscream February 25, 2010 08:00PM

that's mitigated somewhat. txt

Isildur(VIP) February 25, 2010 10:44PM

Played by vets. Felars are not for new players who want to PK. (n/t)

This is most definitely wrong. Standard wasps is nothing to worry about. (n/t)

Unless you are an applicant/rager. Then you are often dead. (n/t)

dervish February 25, 2010 05:29PM

It depends, i'd say odds are they'll live rather than die. Stats will be posted in the future and things will be made apparent. (n/t)

zoskia February 25, 2010 05:46PM

Wasps often slow you and paralyse you. That will fuck up your day bigtime. n/t (n/t)

Re: Dodge for low level pk should not be a consideration. Gear on dmg and try to land two ambushes. They will die.

zoskia February 25, 2010 06:05PM

I RARELY die to ambushing built rangers UNLESS I flee into a snare and eat a second ambush. (At hero that is.) (n/t)

deriveh February 25, 2010 09:10PM

Are there ranger builds you ROUTINELY die to at hero?nt

used_to_play February 25, 2010 09:47PM

True... I suppose cloud mountaineer savage would kill most warriors at hero just by looknig at them in their hometerrain. ^^ (n/t)

deriveh February 25, 2010 10:33PM

At low levels, ambushing will get you the kills. Certain builds can unload HUGE dmg below 20. At hero you need snare/tactics depending on race/build and element of surprise too.
